Donald Trump is President. Again! If you skipped his inauguration speech, honestly, good for you.
The convicted felon has vowed to immediately enact a number of changes, stating in his speech, "I will sign a series of historic executive orders. With these actions, we will begin the complete restoration of America and the revolution of common sense. It’s all about common sense."
So, here's what Trump promised he would do in his speech:
1. Declare a "national emergency" at the US-Mexico border.
This will allow the military and the National Guard to be deployed to the border. Trump also said he'll end "catch and release," which is a practice where illegal immigrants aren't held in detention centers while awaiting hearings in immigration court. He will also attempt to end birthright citizenship.
2. Invoke the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.
Trump claims that he will use this against "foreign gangs and criminal networks" in the US. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, the Act is "a wartime authority that allows the president to detain or deport the natives and citizens of an enemy nation." In short, it could potentially be used to deport legal immigrants based only on their country of citizenship. In reality, the rate of violent, drug, and property crimes is far lower for undocumented immigrants than it is citizens.
3. End the Green New Deal and revoke the electric vehicle mandate.
"We will drill, baby, drill," he said.
4. End "the government policy of trying to socially engineer race and gender into every aspect of public and private life."
Obviously, this isn't an official policy, but could allude to something like bans of the teaching of Critical Race Theory. Simultaneously, he said that he will "stop all government censorship."
5. Make it US policy that there are only two recognized genders, "male and female."
A common anti-trans rallying cry.
6. Change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to "the Gulf of America."
Hillary Clinton laughed at this moment.
7. Take the Panama Canal.
Trump also claimed that the canal was a "gift." Panamanian president José Raúl Mulino has previously said of Trump's claims, "The canal is Panamanian and belongs to Panamanians. There’s no possibility of opening any kind of conversation around this reality, which has cost the country blood, sweat and tears."
8. And, finally, put the American flag on Mars.
Trump said that he will "pursue our manifest destiny into the stars." The ideology of manifest destiny has been accused of justifying genocide against Indigenous Americans.
Big claims from a man who said in the same speech, "My proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker and unifier."
