Tesla has entered the realm of autonomous ride services with the introduction of its Robotaxi service. This new offering is accompanied by a proprietary Robotaxi app, which is currently accessible exclusively to influencers. Yet, there are plans to make it broadly available as the service becomes publicly accessible.
Upon launching the app, users are welcomed with an image of a Model Y Robotaxi. The app's theme highlights a distinct gold Cybercab motif, offering a unique aesthetic. Users have the option to sign in using their existing Tesla account or to create a new one. Once logged in, the app syncs seamlessly with the user's Tesla account, importing profile pictures and payment data. This integration creates a streamlined experience, reminiscent of Tesla's Supercharging system, as there’s no need to settle payments at the end of a ride.
Navigating the App
Destination Selection
The interactive map at the core of the app allows users to pinpoint their current locale and view the Robotaxi service area. Below the map, a search interface helps users input destinations or explore nearby attractions like eateries and shopping hubs. Users can also revisit previous search entries listed below the search box. Notably, the app informs users of the current wait time for a Robotaxi by position and displays an initial flat fee of $4.20, although this pricing model may evolve.
Monitoring Ride Progress
As soon as a pickup spot and destination are submitted, the app displays updates on the status of the vehicle. Users can track the real-time location of the Robotaxi on the map. This includes a visual indicator of the vehicle's arrival time and travel details. Moreover, the app provides a vehicle visualization, ensuring easy identification by showing its color and plate number. During the waiting period, users have the facility to cancel the request or report issues.
Vehicle Arrival
When the Robotaxi pulls in, users can engage with specific vehicle controls. These controls include sounding the horn, flashing lights, and operating door locks and the trunk. Additionally, Tesla supplies Live Activity features for tracking the vehicle even outside the Robotaxi app, along with educational prompts on vehicle use such as handling Model Y doors.
